Application of Engineering Solutions in Tackling Food Shortage in Nigeria: A Review

Introduction Food shortage offers eloquent global challenge, especially in developing nations like Nigeria, where proxies like rapid population growth, climate change, inefficient farming practices, and post-harvest losses donate to food insecurity. Engineering solutions offers justifiable projects to enhance food production, improve distribution system and diminish waste. This paper examines the application of precision agriculture, smart farming, renewable energy, waste-to-food technologies, and advanced food storage solutions in tackling food shortages. Drones, satellite imaging, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and artificial intelligence (AI) are engineering aspect of precision agriculture and smart farming to improve water usage, soil health, and pest management, thereby increasing crop yields. Solar-powered irrigation systems, wind energy for mechanized farming, and biogas for food processing are Renewable energy solutions which ensure sustainable farming practices and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, food recycling, production of insert based protein and anaerobic digestion converts organic waste into valuable food, animal feeds and bio-fertilizers, thereby minimizing food wastage while enhancing availability are aspect of waste to food technologies. In spite of these innovations, High implementation costs, lack of technical expertise, and infrastructural limitations are challenges which hinder widespread adoption. These barriers require policy support, investment in agricultural technology, and collaborative efforts between governments and private sectors. MATERIALS AND METHOD The method adopted for this study was the review of literature and Related literature from various sources such as internet, newspapers, official documents and publications were reviewed and analysed to draw conclusions for this work RESULT AND DISCUSSION Application of engineering solutions is crucial for tackling food shortages in Nigeria. Mechanized farming, improved irrigation, food storage innovations, sustainable energy, and digital agriculture can enhance productivity and food security. Effectively tackling food shortages in Nigeria through engineering solutions and proper agricultural funding intervention stating from the local, state and federal requires a holistic approach that combines technology, infrastructure investment, sustainable practices, policy support, and community engagement. By addressing these interconnected challenges, Nigeria can enhance its agricultural productivity and ensure food security for its growing population.
