Assessment of The Public Road Transport System in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria

Introduction Transportation stands as an indispensable force driving the functionality, resilience, and continuity of human-built landscapes. Its influence reverberates throughout the constructed environment, fostering socio-economic engagement, optimizing resource allocation, and preserving ecological balance. This study investigates the public road transport system in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a focus on assessing its infrastructure, service quality, and challenges. It examines the role of public transportation in enhancing socio-economic activities while addressing the persistent issues of overcrowding, poor maintenance, safety concerns, and environmental sustainability Methodology The methodology adopted for this study is a combination of primary data collected through questionnaires and secondary sources, the study evaluates the perceptions of commuters and transport operators regarding the effectiveness of the transport system in the study area. Results and discussion Key findings highlight significant concerns about inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and the deteriorating condition of vehicles, which contribute to inefficiencies in the system. Overcrowding and unreliable services were also identified as major challenges faced by commuters. However, respondents indicated strong support for interventions such as increased funding for infrastructure improvements, the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies, and stricter safety regulations. The study emphasizes the need for strategic planning and government intervention to address these issues and improve the overall efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of the public road transport system in Abeokuta. Conclusion The study recommends better maintenance practices, investment in modern public transport vehicles, and the integration of sustainable practices into the transportation framework. In conclusion, the study recommends that Abeokuta can develop a more effective transport system that meets the growing mobility needs of its residents and enhances the quality of urban life through effective collaboration and partnership with the private sector.
